How to Become a Home Inspector in Alberta

Home Inspector Licensing in Alberta

To get a home inspector license in Alberta, you must provide Alberta:
  1. Proof of Education, and InterNACHI has two options for you (see below).
  2. Satisfactory Completion of a Test Inspection of a dwelling supervised by an approved educational institution or a licensed home inspector holding a Certified Master Inspector (CMI®) designation or a Registered Home Inspector (RHI) designation.
Proof of Education Option #1:
Provide a degree, diploma, or certificate in home inspection from an approved educational institution. You also have to pass the proctored exam. The InterNACHI free, online "Home Inspector Certificate Program" is listed on the Alberta website. Not a member? Join today

  1. Take the InterNACHI's approved 202-hr pre-licensing course. (free and online for members). Alberta calls this a "certificate program" but please be aware that this is a different program than InterNACHI's Certified Professional Inspector (CPI) program. After completing the Alberta pre-licensing course, you will be able to download a certificate of completion as proof of education from  your dashboard.
  2. Pass InterNACHI's Proctored Online Inspector Examination. This is a requirement in addition to completing the Alberta Pre-Licensing Program. To take a proctored exam:

Proof of Education Option #2:

Provide an approved home inspection designation from an approved industry association or regulatory body. An approved home inspection designation includes CMI® (Certified Master Inspector) granted by the Master Inspector Certification Board at www.certifiedmasterinspector.org. Becoming a Certified Master Inspector® might be a simpler way to acquire a license for experienced inspectors.

Satisfactory Completion of a Test Inspection

In addition to providing a degree, diploma or certificate in home inspection from an approved educational institution, Alberta requires that you submit proof of satisfactory completion of a test inspection of a dwelling supervised by an approved educational institution or a licensed home inspector holding a Certified Master Inspector (CMI) designation or a Registered Home Inspector (RHI) designation.
