What would your recommendation upon finding in the attic evidence of a fire accompanied by a strong odor?
a. Defer to a structural engineer, blast with sodium bicarbonate.
b. Defer to a structural engineer if the char layer is more than 1/8-inch thick.
c. Defer to a structural engineer if the base of the pyrolysis zone is more than 1/8-inch deep.
d. If the char layer is less than 1/8-inch thick, the damage is cosmetic only. Spray with a bleach/vinegar solution to remove odor.
