Mechanical Appliance Location and Access

Area 1: A level working space of at least 30 inches deep and 30 inches wide (762 mm by 762 mm) must be provided in front of the control side of the appliance. Area 2: The minimum size of the attic access must be 22 inches by 30 inches (559 mm by 762 mm). Area 3: If an appliance is installed in the attic, there must be a solid, continuous flooring path from the attic access opening to the appliance. The flooring or platform must be at least 24 inches wide (610 mm). The maximum distance between the attic access opening and the appliance cannot exceed 20 feet (6096 mm). The minimum headroom along the path must be 30 inches (762 mm) at any point above the access pathway. Note: Adequate lighting must be provided along the path to the appliance. A light switch should be located near the attic access entrance, and a receptacle outlet should be installed near the appliance for tools or service equipment.
