Length of Conductor at Electrical Box

Minimum Length of Conductor: At each outlet, junction, or switch point, a minimum length of 6 inches (152 mm) of free conductor must be provided. This length is measured from the point in the box where the conductor emerges from its raceway or cable sheath. Extension Beyond the Opening: If the opening to the outlet, junction, or switch box is less than 8 inches (200 mm) in any dimension, each conductor must extend at least 3 inches (75 mm) outside of the box. This requirement ensures that there is sufficient wire length outside the box to make splicing and terminations easier and safer.
