Toe Nailing

Driving a nail at an angle through the edge of one piece of wood into another creates a strong, angled connection. This technique secures wall studs to top and bottom plates or attaches joists to beams. When toenailing, one could position the nail away from the end of the board at a distance equal to about one-third of the nail's length.
