Separated Floor Joist With Full Depth Solid Blocking
If a pipe or duct vent passes through the floor, the double joists may be separated to allow the pipe or vent to pass through. In this illustration, full-depth solid blocking is required so that the two joists will function as a combined member without twisting. 2024 IRC R502.4(2).
