Rafter Notch, the Cantilevered Portions of Rafters.

Notches on the ends of rafters or ceiling joists cannot exceed one-fourth of the member’s depth. When a cantilevered rafter is notched at the top plate, the rafter must retain a minimum depth of 3½ inches (89 mm) at the notch.
