Rafter Cutting, Notching, and Bored Holes
Ensure that there are no notches in the middle one-third of the rafter span and that any notches in the top or bottom of the rafter do not exceed one-sixth of the rafter's depth. Ensure that notches at the ends of the rafters do not exceed one-fourth of the rafter's depth (using the actual dimension, not nominal). Ensure that no bored holes are within 2 inches of the top or bottom edges of rafters. Check that any bored hole located more than 2 inches from the top or bottom of the rafter does not exceed one-third of the rafter’s depth. Verify that any notches on cantilevered (overhanging) portions of rafters leave at least 3½ inches of the rafter intact and that the cantilever length does not exceed 24 inches.
