Purlin Example

Here's an example of a purlin installation. Purlins reduce the span of rafters by providing additional support between the roof ridge and the wall plate. This intermediate support helps distribute the roof load more evenly and reduces the stress on the rafters. The purlins should be no smaller than the size of the rafters they support. Purlins must be supported by 2x4 braces installed to bearing walls at a slope no less than 45 degrees from the horizontal. These braces must be spaced no more than 4 feet on center, and the unbraced length must not exceed 8 feet.
