Lateral Load
Lateral loads shall be transferred to the ground or to a structure capable of transmitting them to the ground. The IRC requires decks supported by the attachment to an exterior wall to be positive anchored to the primary structure, and be designed for both vertical and lateral loads (2021 IRC R507.9.2).
