Header joists can may be used for spans not exceeding 4 feet (1219 mm). If the header joist span is greater than 4 feet (1219 mm), the header and trimmer joists should be doubled to carry the additional load. There is an exception when the header joist is within 3 feet (914 mm) of the trimmer joist bearing.
