Drilling and Notching of the Top Plate

When a top plate is notched or drilled by more than 50% of its width to accommodate piping or other utilities, the plate must be reinforced with a 16-gauge (0.054 inch) steel tie that is 1.5 inches wide. One of the most common defects is the complete absence of the required metal tie when a notch exceeds 50% of the plate width.
