Bearing and Overlap

Joists framing from opposite sides over a load-bearing support must overlap by at least 3 inches (76 mm) and be fastened together with a minimum of three 10d face nails. Alternatively, a wood or metal splice with equal or greater strength than the nailed lap connection is allowed.
