Purlin and Bracing at Roof Rafter Spans

Purlines reduce the span of rafters. Purlins must be at least the same size as the rafters they support and must be continuous. They should be supported by 2x4 braces that are installed at a minimum 45-degree angle to bearing walls. Braces should be spaced no more than 4 feet apart, with an unbraced length not exceeding 8 feet.
